[D4, EVENT] Tell Her to Buy Me an Earldom of Land, part I

Post by Cearnach » Tue Sep 14, 2021 5:23 am

EVENT THREAD: This thread has no specific time-stamp, and you may post in it during any timeslot on D4 except LN.

The Earldom of Northumbria has been held by the King since 1157, when Henry Curtmantle forced King William of Scotland to surrender it to him. The Lionheart's need for cash, however, is far greater than his need for yet another English title. He plans to sell the title to the highest bidder, and he has made this plan known to the great powers of his realm.

Part 1: On the first day of this event, Richard will entertain bids from interested parties for the Earldom of Northumbria, the northernmost of the English earldoms.

Anyone can make a bid, provided they do so in a manner that is not crass, but rather gives honor to the occasion.

Bids must be made with a successful Courtesy check at -2 (it's hard to be courteous when talking about buying power). Failures of Courtesy will irk Richard, but not enough to refuse your money. There will be other repercussions.

Note that Richard will expect all bids to be paid, as all wealth that can be spared should be donated for the good of the crusade. Characters with 16 or higher Crusading passion will never entertain anything other than paying out. Others may attempt to hold back their bids at the cost of 2 points of Crusading Passion and an Intrigue roll. The wardens sent to collect the money will be persuaded, but Richard will be irked.

Every phrase and every sentence is an end and a beginning,/Every poem an epitaph. And any action/Is a step to the block, to the fire, down the sea's throat/Or to an illegible stone: and that is where we start.
We die with the dying:/See, they depart, and we go with them./We are born with the dead:/See, they return, and bring us with them./The moment of the rose and the moment of the yew-tree/Are of equal duration. A people without history/Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern/Of timeless moments. So, while the light fails/On a winter's afternoon, in a secluded chapel/History is now and England

In the Early Night, Whitehands goes to speak with his friend the king about the Northumbria question, pointing out the good reasons for it to be with a trusted lieutenant of his majesty, beside the lands of Whitehands' son-in-law, da Quincy, and... either because he mentioned the offer's value in pounds one too many times or perhaps because he didn't mention his zeal for the crusade enough times, Richard's face suggested to Robert that this was not going to go his way.

Hugh de Puiset empties some of his coffers to submit a bid of 2000 pounds. But he is a tiresome, venal man, and Richard finds him grotesque at times. Times like this one.

William the Lion bids 4500 pounds to return Scotland's lands to Scotland. He has half a mind to give Northumberland to his son, David.

To say Richard is displeased is an understatement. More will definitely be said on this subject. Much more.
