[D4 EA, Open] - Wandering the streets to find God

Post by Simon IV de Montfort » Tue Sep 14, 2021 10:02 am

He remembered being told that one could find anything in London. A small part of him wondered if that meant one could also find God - in the spiritual sense - here as well.

Simon, he realized, was nervous. About the competition, about the Earlship, about a lot of different elements. He remembered the blonde agent from yesterday, and wondered if she was doing alright. So here he was, ambling through London.

In search of what?
God?
Peace?
Redemption?

Honestly, he knew not.

It is amazing what one finds when one looks for the hand of the creator. It seemed everywhere one turned in London there was a church. St. Bartholomew's, St. Paul's, several different Mary's. And then there were the homes stacked atop each other, the little courtyards that contained stunted gardens or a basin of water, and looming above it all...the Tower just outside the eastern walls.

As you find yourself staring at it, you hear the clatter of hooves on cobblestone coming down the street. No hurry to the pace, put definitely getting closer.

We die with the dying:/See, they depart, and we go with them./We are born with the dead:/See, they return, and bring us with them./The moment of the rose and the moment of the yew-tree/Are of equal duration. A people without history/Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern/Of timeless moments. So, while the light fails/On a winter's afternoon, in a secluded chapel/History is now and England

Making sure is he out of the way of the traffic, if it is to go elsewhere, he turns to see who approaches. If it is for him, so be it; If not, then he would let it pass.

Riding down the street is a man in white with an enormous red cross emblazoned across his chest and on the shield slung over his back. Just to his right is another man, this one tall and sturdy of build, wearing a device of a red cross on an orange background. This second man smiles at you as if in recognition as the clop down the street.

Simon returned the nod, but if he didn't recognize the man then that would be that.

Seeing the tower reminded him of Ranulf - of that night...

But perhaps he did recognize the man? (Recognize roll vs tn 10 - 3, success)

The man is none other than Roger de Bigod, Earl (maybe?) of Norfolk. The story is complicated, but he is definitely riding alongside a Templar. That much the cross can tell you.

Hmm. Perhaps a friend from his childhood? Nevertheless, he took to it to greet the man more thoroughly.

"Hail, Lord of Norfolk. Does the morrow find you well?"

"Well enough, my Lord of Montfort-l'Amaury." He smiles down at you from horseback. "Certain difficulties remain, but I am in fine company, and it is a pleasant enough day. How does it find you?"

"I have been well, sir - I was simply wandering the streets to realign myself. May I ask about your current journey, or would you rather I not?"

He smiles. "Just off to the Temple with Sir Jourdain, here, to see about finances. It's a terrible thing to manage an Earldom without its revenues, but such is my lot until the King makes his ruling."

Simon nodded in sympathy, but then had an idea.

"Perhaps I could accompany you, sir? I also have business in the temple, and now is as good a time as any to conduct it."

Bigod smiles. "That would be welcome!"
