Eleanor of Aquitaine to Richard de Redvers

Post by Eleanor of Aquitaine » Sat Aug 28, 2021 3:33 pm

To Devon, Grandson of that most loyal of Earls, Eleanor R. sends greetings and instruction.

I know this letter will find you in good spirits on the occasion of my son's accession. Though we must all, of course, remember the long service my husband gave his people, our hearts cannot help but be gladdened that such a strong and divinely-favored King will have his hand on the tiller. Speaking of which, I expect it shall be rather a large party that will arrive in Havre for the crossing. You may wish to send five ships, and have a few more ready for the return crossing, which will be less then a month from the first. We expect to have a far larger company with us then. Perhaps even a host as shall make Saladin think again about his little campaign.

I know you will be a good lad and do this for us, and we shall see you in Westminster,
Eleanor R.

To Her Majesty the Queen, Richard de Redvers, Earl of Devon and of Cornwall, sends his fondest regards,

Your majesty, having anticipated the crowd of admirers that your grace and your son's bearing must attract, I have the number of ships requested plus two further waiting at Havre for your party. I hope that the changing season has not troubled the journey, though of course the fair fields of France do not come so swiftly to chill as our island. It does my heart good that you will be present in Westminster, and that I shall have the pleasure of seeing you there. No doubt you will have anticipated the small trouble that seems to have spread itself out before me, and I hope that you will have time enough to entertain my plea for assistance when we meet. Until that time, I remain,

Yours in Some Anxiety,
Richard de Redvers.
