There have been three major revolts against the authority of the Kings within living memory. During each of them, the powers of England split and fought each other for mastery. Here is a quick and dirty breakdown of which side each house supported in each of these major conflicts, so you can see who your enemies and allies are most likely to be:

The Anarchy [King Stephen vs. Empress Matilda and Henry fitzEmpress.]
D'Aubigny: Supported Stephen.
De Beaumont: Supported Stephen
De Bigod: Supported Stephen, then took Matilda's money and sat out the war.
De Blondeville: Supported Matilda
De Clare: Supported Stephen, then Matilda, then Stephen again.
De Ferrers: Supported Stephen
De Mandeville: Supported Stephen, then Matilda, then Stephen, then themselves, then Matilda again.
De Redvers: Supported Matilda
De Vere: Supported Stephen, then Matilda
De Warenne: Supported Stephen

The Revolt of the Young King [King Henry II Curtmantle vs. Prince Henry, Prince Geoffrey, Prince Richard, Eleanor of Aquitaine, King Philip II of France, and William the Lion]
D'Aubigny: Supported Henry II
De Beaumont: Supported Henry the Young King
De Bigod: Supported Henry the Young King
De Blondeville: Supported Henry the Young King
De Clare: Supported Henry II
De Ferrers: Supported Henry the Young King
De Mandeville: supported Henry II
De Redvers: Supported Henry II
De Vere: Supported Henry II
De Warenne: Supported Henry II

Richard's Rebellion [King Henry II Curtmantle vs. Richard Lionheart, Prince John, and Philip II of France.]
D'Aubigny: Nominally supported Henry II, but stayed home and focused on the crusade.
De Beaumont: Supported Richard Lionheart
De Bigod: Supported Richard Lionheart
De Blondeville: Supported Richard Lionheart
De Clare: Sat out.
De Ferrers: Sat out.
De Mandeville: Supported Henry II
De Redvers: Sat out.
De Vere: Sat out.
De Warenne: Supported Henry II

Every phrase and every sentence is an end and a beginning,/Every poem an epitaph. And any action/Is a step to the block, to the fire, down the sea's throat/Or to an illegible stone: and that is where we start.
We die with the dying:/See, they depart, and we go with them./We are born with the dead:/See, they return, and bring us with them./The moment of the rose and the moment of the yew-tree/Are of equal duration. A people without history/Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern/Of timeless moments. So, while the light fails/On a winter's afternoon, in a secluded chapel/History is now and England
