These are the public areas of the monastery, and are often highly populated by monks at work. The cells and scriptoria of the monastery can be accessed from here, as can the north transept of the abbey church. Religious characters not required to stay with their lords or their retinues would be offered lodging in the cells here by the Benedictines.
