The residential part of the palace was arranged along a long hallway that bisected the floor. The rooms of the Beaumonts, de Blondevilles, and Roger de Bigod's people were all closed at this late hour, but surely there must be some sign of the boy's passing? Some clue as to which of the many apartments to search?

Every phrase and every sentence is an end and a beginning,/Every poem an epitaph. And any action/Is a step to the block, to the fire, down the sea's throat/Or to an illegible stone: and that is where we start.
We die with the dying:/See, they depart, and we go with them./We are born with the dead:/See, they return, and bring us with them./The moment of the rose and the moment of the yew-tree/Are of equal duration. A people without history/Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern/Of timeless moments. So, while the light fails/On a winter's afternoon, in a secluded chapel/History is now and England --Eliot, Little Gidding

"The kitchen staff said the boy was carrying a sack of pies?" Giles asked out loud. "Why would he not have just had the servants prepare it, why be so secretive? I imagine he'll be in for a switching from his father after all this."
Giles's pace slows a little, now assuming that they were likely only to be dealing with a poor boy with a sore stomach from overstuffing his gob. But the sooner they find him, the sooner he can get to bed, so he starts to look for pie crumbs on the stairwell and floor.
But his eyes weren't sharp enough in the poor light of this hour.

Grabbing a maidservant and giving her a harsh look has her quickly confirming that she saw a little red-head carrying a sack slipping into the Royal Apartments. She thought he might have been a cousin of the line, but if you're saying he's a Faulconbridge, then she apologizes, but he's very much not where he's supposed to be.

Giles looks to the other investigators and runs his fingers through his hair in indecision.
"The Royal Apartments aren't exactly the kind of place one just visits on a whim at this hour of night. Hopefully the guards in that section sent him on his way."
