Llwelyn nods.

Not that I'll be the one to tell.

"In the meanwhile, I think some misdirection might be a start. If John proves himself to be an inept squabbler, it may be easier to give the final push."

Andre nods.

"It's a dangerous thing," he says, "to prepare against a king's son and brother."

"Agreed. As I said, I hope to provide a nudge, not a tackle."

[Richard de Clare]

Richard pondered to himself why they had switched to Welsh, but chose not to tip his hand. Did Andre not want to go after John? An interesting point. It would seem that someone else would need to back Llywelyn's play, particularly if it was the only one on offer. He resolved to hold himself in readiness. If John could be crushed, he was willing to take a risk.

[Andre l'Ecrivain]

Andre takes a deep breath, holds it a moment, releases it slowly, nods.

"And a nudge against a stone in the road can make a man fall," he says, the language of his home county, still spoken in many places therein, tripping from his tongue. "The stone may serve well in such a role, though it would be unpleasant for it."

[Richard de Clare]

"My vassal is cryptic," de Clare chuckles. "There is nothing in this that is easy. Had it been, we would have done it long ago. But there will not be a greater opportunity than now."

[Andre l'Ecrivain]

"My lord is wise," Andre replies. "Perhaps I shall press on the agnatic matter more fully with the King of England. Perhaps that will help."

[Richard de Clare]

"Perhaps." He nodded. "As for me, I will be looking forward to my King and his brother asking me for my time in the near future. We might have a chance, provided John comes to see me in public."
